SWEDFLIGHT 4.1 adapted for Combat 1

Picture from the middle of Hälsingland seen with FS98

Almost the same view as above but seen with Combat

When CFS was released we immediately tested it together with SWEDFLIGHT and the new qualitities in the scenery that was revealed astonished us all. The already good textures in SWEDFLIGHT were then tweaked even more and they are now specially adapted to look good in CFS. This is the first simulator from the next generation that gives a hint of what we are expecting from Microsoft in the future. CFS  have a different graphics engine compared to FS98, that by the help of the right type of textures gives a realism to the SWEDFLIGHT scenery not seen before. Note that we are still using the R8-type of texture files with their very limited color palette instead of the full color BMP textures that CFS are using. We are still waiting for the tool needed to include also our own BMP versions - but the look of the old ones is still amazing for the moment.

Note that with most of the older panels you can only fly VFR in CFS, all navigational installments don't work. So until you have downloaded some new panels (even with GPS) from our two links further down, you have to keep to the VFR flying as a change :-)

Look first at all screen shots we have collected from different parts in SWEDFLIGHT so that you can judge for yourself the new quality of the scenery.  These shots are heavily compressed, from 2MB down to 50-60 kB so they look much, much better in reality. They are all made by a TNT graphics card in 3D mode.

In the end of the page you will get the installation advice. You will also get some links to very good CFS sites where you can download a lot of extra additions.

All pictures down here are made with version 3 of the scenery. When time permits you will see pictures from version 4 here in stead.

How to install and activate the SWEDFLIGHT scenery in CFS

Some of you may wonder how to use SWEDFLIGHT in CFS. Here follows the advice you need to activate the scenery and then to use it. The procedure is quite like the one in FS98. You can choose between two procedures - with or without FS98.

1st time installation without FS98:
Make folders outside the CFS-folder system: C:\FLTADDON\SWEDEN\ (if C:\ is the letter of your hard drive). Make subfolders:

  •  C:\FLTADDON\SWEDEN\SCENERY (for the scenery files)
  •  C:\FLTADDON\SWEDEN\TEXTURE (for the texture files)
  •  C:\FLTADDON\SWEDEN\DOC (for the information files)
Install all Zip files EXCEPT the SWF4MAIN package. Unzip SWFL_A - E plus SWF4NAV in the Scenery directory for SWEDFLIGHT and SWF4TEX1 - 8 in the Texture directory for SWEDFLIGHT. The description for the installation of SWF4MAIN follows down here.

Switching between texture packages
To make it easier to switch between the default textures from Microsoft that are needed when you use CFS outside SWEDFLIGHT and those that are needed when you use SWEDFLIGHT, you will get a special procedure here. (If you know DOS and its routines you can do it simpler and smarter than the method used here, but this one is at least a failsafe one and not at all difficult, if you follow the advices.)

  • Make a directory in the root directory on your hard disk and call it DEFAULT. Download the following texture package and unzip it there: SWFLCFS.ZIP (It contains some of the default textures from CFS you already have.)
  • Make a directory in the root directory on your hard disk and call it SWFL. Download the following texture package and unzip it there: SWF4MAIN.ZIP (It contains the special textures that SWEDFLIGHT needs to give CFS the nordic look.)
  • Download SWFLBAT.ZIP, and unzip the two batch files in the Texture directory of  CFS. Note that it is important that they reside in this special directory. They are called CFS.BAT and SWFL.BAT, and with them you activate either those textures from SWEDFLIGHT or the original ones.
Make two shortcuts to those two batch files and put them on your Desktop or some other appropiate place. Do it like this if you are unsure how to make a shortcut:
  • Place the mouse pointer on your desktop and press the right button on your mouse and choose New/Shortcut. Browse to the Texture directory in CFS and find CFS.BAT, double click on it. Press Next. Write for example 'CFS textures' as a name for the shortcut.
  • Do the same for the other batch file. Make a shortcut for  SWFL.BAT and call it 'SWEDFLIGHT textures'
  • Place your mouse pointer on the icon for one of the batch files. Press the right button and choose Properties. Under Program check the box: 'Close on exit'. Repeat this for the other shortcut.
Before you want to use SWEDFLIGHT in CFS just run the SWFL.BAT shortcut and the right textures will be copied into CFS texture directory. And before you  run CFS in normal mode you run the CFS.BAT shortcut - and the default textures are copied back.

The activation of the scenery is described further down.

Installation in CFS if you already have FS98 and SWEDFLIGHT installed:
The only procedure you need to do is to install the extra texture packages as described above under 'Switching between texture packages'. Make also the two shortcuts as described above. The activation of the scenery is described down here.

Activating the scenery in CFS
After installation the scenery must be activated in CFS

  • Choose  FREEFLIGHT and FLY NOW.
  • Click on WORLD and "Scenery Library" in the CFS menu. Press OK in the warning dialog box.
  • Click on the "Files" and "Add" -button to open the edit scenery area dialog. In the "Scenery Area Path", write the exact path where you installed the scenery files, e.g.:C:\FLTADDON\SWEDEN\SCENERY\*.BGL. (the ending: *.BGL is important).
  • Write 'SWEDFLIGHT' in the box "Scenery area title"
  • Choose 'Local' for the "Scenery area type"
  • Write '001' for "Scenery area layer"
  • Check the box "Scenery area active"
  • Choose Area layer: 001.

  • If you also fly the Norway98 scenery (which we hope) you must give Area layer 001 for SWEDFLIGHT and 002 for Norway98. (Sweden must have a lower figure, whatever it is.)

How to start a flight from a specific SWEDFLIGHT airport in CFS

You will find the airports in SWEDFLIGHT if you do like this:

  • Choose FREEFLIGHT and FLY NOW.
  • In the menu  WORLD\GOTO choose "Airfield" and then "Advanced Scenery".
  • Under "Scenery from 6.0 and before" you will find the airports organised in four groups.

There exist already many additions for CFS on the Net that you can download - missions, sceneries and not to forget, extra aircraft and panels, specially made for CFS. The best adress we have found is this one, a visit there can really be recommended:

Another very good site where you can get new panels and aircraft for CFS is this one, on page two there you will find a panel with GPS that works in CFS:
