Do it Yourself!
- ten steps to get started on Your building

Want to get started with Your own cockpit? Hook up on Cockpits guide to the Builders Galax, and transform Your plain desktop into an instrument panel. All You need is an afternoon off, a saw and a couple of MDF boards...

Step 1 - Saw

Use an appropriate desk and start sawing. The desk shouldnīt be higher than 60 centimeters. Open up a square in the middle of the desktop, the size should be enough to house and slope a 21" screen, a tilted 15" and have room for an extra space for the gear lever mechanism.

Step 2 - Hinges

Once we have our square, itīs time to screw the hinges and the shelves in place. I am using two shelves and four hinges for this setup. The hinges are practical, since itīs easy to adjust the sloping angle. Remember to fix the shelves on the far side.

Step 3 - sidepieces

When the appropriate slope has been decided, we make the side pieces and mount them with square fittings. These fittings are used to support both the MIP and the glareshield, and itīs crucial that they have the same sloping angle as the bottom shelves.

Step 4 - Test

When both side pieces are mounted it could be a good thing to test the construction. Put the monitors in place and make sure that the sidepieces are mounted slightly ahead of the screens.

Step 5 - Top Fittings

Itīs time for the last detail on the side pieces, the top fittings. Two on each side should be enough, once they are mounted on both the inner and the top side of the side pieces.

Step 6 - the Glareshield

The glareshield should at least be 30 centimeters ahead of the monitors. In addition it should be firmly mounted to the side pieces. Therefore itīs recommended to use an MDF board of 50-60 centimeters of depth and 16mm of thickness.

Step 7 - Mounting

Itīs time to mount the glareshield to the side pieces. Simply attach it to the fittings.

Step 8 - Candy

Once the glare is in place, we can start adding the "candy" to it. By candy I mean the Mode Control Panel and the glareshield wings. You can also put a "roof" on top of it, but since this is a somewhat delicate detail, I suggest we return to this part in a later article.

Step 9 - The MIP

The MIP could be as complex as You want or as as simple as possible. We start with the simple one by measuring up the PFD, ND and EICAS instruments and make room for these on an 8mm MDF board.

Step 10 - Hit the curcuit breaker

With everything in place itīs time to hit the circuit breaker. There is still a long way to go to make the MIP look like a real one, but this is nevertheless a good start.
